The Supreme Court Just Derailed Thousands of Lawsuits Against Monsanto Over Glyphosate and Cancer

In a 7-2 ruling, the Supreme Court sided with Monsanto and blocked cancer victims from suing over missing cancer warnings. The Supreme Court just handed Monsanto a major victory.

In a 7-2 ruling in Monsanto Co. v. Durnell, the Court held that federal pesticide law (FIFRA) preempts state-law “failure-to-warn” claims. Glyphosate is a broad-spectrum systemic herbicide and crop drying agent used to kill weeds. Glyphosate was discovered by Monsanto chemist John E. Franz in 1970. By 1974, Monsanto had introduced it into the market under the trade name Roundup.
