Trump Just Gave Legal Immunity to Corporations that Poison America’s Food Supply

President Donald Trump just ordered the U.S. Department of Agriculture to make more poisonous glyphosate, while granting legal protection for makers of proven-dangerous herbicides like Monsanto’s Roundup.

Invoking the Defense Production Act, Trump on Wednesday designated glyphosate-based herbicides and elemental phosphorus as “critical to national defense” and ordered Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins to prioritize and secure domestic supplies while also granting producers of these chemicals legal immunity from any lawsuits resulting from damage their products may cause to Americans’ health.

Glyphosate is a broad-spectrum systemic herbicide and crop drying agent used to kill weeds. Glyphosate was discovered by Monsanto chemist John E. Franz in 1970. By 1974, Monsanto had introduced it into the market under the trade name Roundup.

Since Roundup became available, there have been a series of controversies. There are numerous studies suggesting that the amount of glyphosate detected in people’s bodies has gone up exponentially. One of the more bizarre actions in terms of the health and safety of EU citizens is the saga of Monsanto and its toxic herbicide or weed-killer, Roundup, the most widely used weed-killer on the planet. On October 25, 2017 the European Union Commission again announced that it lacked the necessary member state votes to approve a ten year license extension for weed-killer glyphosate. They will try again. Behind this seeming routine announcement is one of the hottest battles over food and human health the world has seen since the 1972 USA decision to ban spraying of deadly DDT pesticides on crops.
