Sam Altman’s World ID Expands Biometric Identity Checks
A biometric identity system built on iris scans is expanding into mainstream online services while its backers outline new ways to tie verified identity to revenue generation.
The initiative, led by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, introduced its standalone World ID app in public beta on April 17. The app separates identity management from the existing World App crypto wallet and is described as a tool to “verify with platforms and services, manage your authenticators, store credentials and control how your World ID is used.” [Read More]

The UK government confirmed it is scrapping the mandatory requirement for digital ID cards by 2029 – those opposing digital IDs celebrated. However, the devil is in the details.
The government has only scrapped the “BritCard” scheme; it is still proceeding with plans to require some form of digital identification.
“By using the BritCard deception to misrepresent digital identity, the government provided the people with a loathed bogeyman they could easily defeat. The evident ploy was supposed to lull the people into accepting their digital identities by convincing them they had successfully rejected the fake BritCard version of digital ID,” Iain Davis writes. Facial recognition as a biometric school entry system is already being tested in 20 schools in Russia. Alongside the use of facial recognition, the school grounds are fenced, cameras are installed along the perimeter and entry is through checkpoints.
